How do I keep going when someone criticises my writing

First off, no-one likes a bad review. It makes us feel sensitive and vulnerable about our writing. Just remember all writers have had their fair share of bad reviews but what you do next separates the successful from the unsuccessful. Consider the following:

  1. It’s very important to stick to your writing schedule no matter what and not wallow in your misery or anger. (Or at least, give yourself a time limit if you do need a bit of wallow-time 😉
  2. Take any bad reviews as a challenge and use them to become a better writer.
  3. Be objective when reading them. You can learn something from a detailed review — it could be chance to look at your writing from a different light.
Bad reviews are part of the territory. Yes, they hurt but don’t let them define you as a writer. It also helps if you develop a positive author mindset.
