Writing book of the moment —
Bird By Bird: Some Instructions On Writing And Life by American author, Anne Lamott, is
a soulful laugh-out-loud book. A 1994 classic it’s ostensibly about how to write. It’s also about why we read books and the need to express life’s beautiful moments. It’s not important to be published, Lamott likes to remind her students. What’s more pertinent is becoming conscious: to use writing as a tool, ‘to live as if we are dying’.
For Lamott writing is also about listening – to an inner voice. She sits down around the same time every day and tries to quieten her mind. She urges: ‘Tell the truth. If you’re a writer, you have a moral obligation to do this.’
